Sakurai Futamigaura is a landmark in Itoshima. Instead of the standard red, the torri gate is white, complementing the blue sky and ocean.
Behind the gate are the two rocks called ‘Meoto Iwa” - wedded rocks, connected by a straw rope, called Shimenawa, symbolising marriage and attachment.
The ‘No Firework' sign is a contrast to the location’s serenity. Because I can imagine, couples come for good luck. Then parties come for good luck. Then noise, fireworks, pollution.
(I didn’t leave the can, please don’t arrest me, elders of Itoshima)
In 2025, an American tourist was arrested after travelling to a remote Indian Ocean island and leaving behind a can of Coke for the world's most isolated tribe to try.
This photograph predates that by six years.
But, maybe there’s a similar insight to that.
No matter how far, how sacred, Coke finds a way.

People always want to poke and corrupt the pure and innocent.
